American Kestrel by Kate Stanford

American Kestrel Falco sparvervius
Food In cities, the Kestrel, or sparrow hawk, eats mostly House Sparrows. In the country the Kestrel eats insects, small birds, and rodents. Unlike other falcons, it catches its prey on the ground.
Migration Kestrels stay in the United States all year. Canadian Kestrels over winter in the United States.
Habitat Towns, cities, parks, open country, and farmlands.
Nesting Kestrels lay 4-5 white brown-spotted eggs in a cavity without a nest. The female incubates the eggs; the male goes hunting. The female receives her food away from the nest. The family tends to stay together after the babies fledge.
